What is an Affiliate?

What is an Affiliate?Today, making money online can be done in a variety of ways but one of the most powerful and effective is by establishing an affiliate program.  What is an affiliate?  Simply put, this is the result of creating a connection with one or more other online businesses that offer the same products and/or services as your site, or companies that can enhance and complement what you sell.

Many people ask what is an affiliate, which is not difficult to understand but can be confusing.  With an affiliate, you are creating a link with a commissioned agent for what you sell on your website.  That means the affiliate would be paid a small commission of the sales made from your products and/or services sold.  Many times, an affiliate will also be referred to as a reseller, which is virtually the same thing.

Typically, an affiliate program cost nothing to join.  Once you have determined the affiliates you want to be connected to, they would provide you with everything needed so products and/or services would be sold.  However, before you run out and join just any affiliate program, you need to learn some important information.  The following are great rules to follow in the establishment of a program, helping you understand the question “What is an affiliate” even better.

  • There has to be a generous structure in place pertaining to pay.  In other words, commission rates should be high, accepting nothing less than 25%.
  • Additionally, you want to make sure any affiliate program being considered has the look and feel of a professional, successful website.  Obviously, as you have potential customers coming to your site, you would not want them clicking through on a link only to be redirected to a poor looking and hard to navigate affiliate.
  •  Any affiliate program should offer several different banners, graphics, and text links from which you choose.  That way, you can go with what looks best on your particular website.
  • Any statistics provided by an affiliate program must be in real time.  Otherwise, you will not have the ability to keep an honest track of what is going on.  Therefore, not only do statistics need to be updated automatically, but also in real time.
  • Regarding pay, you will need to understand the frequency of which you will be paid.  If possible, you might considering staggering payment if you have more than one affiliate program, which would give you ongoing income.
  • An affiliate program should also have a solid statistics page.  That way, you would quickly be able to identify how many click through processes have been completed, the number of clicks that turned into actual sales, the amount of money you have made on each sale, and so on.
  • If possible, you should always ask any affiliate program for examples of other sites they are working with to give you a better look and feel of how your website would be managed.
  • Find out if you have a way of receiving text messages or emails whenever a sale is made.
  • The program should also provide you with excellent customer and technical support.  That way, if you have any questions or experience problems, you would have a solution quickly. You also want to make sure any affiliate program you consider has some type of newsletter where you can gain more insight and tips on how to be successful.

What is an affiliate program?  This program is a key dynamic of reaching the ultimate level of success with an online business regardless of size or industry.  By networking, you and the affiliate benefit from each other.  By having banners and ads, you are providing your customers with something extra, which will impress and keep them coming back for more.  If you want to see the best results possible, there are also a number of techniques that have been proven to work such as:

  • Be careful when you see anything offered “free”.  While there are affiliate programs and other things free, this could also indicate cheap.  Therefore, make sure you read all the information carefully so you have a full understanding of any involved fees.
  • Try to spend the majority of your time marketing your website and affiliate program with the lesser focus being on actually working on them new content and upgrades.
  • You want to do all you can to get a high ranking for a number of search engines to include the larger ones such as Google.com and even smaller sites.
  • Never overuse graphics, which cause a website to look cluttered and messy, not to mention slow the loading of pages, which will cause visitors to leave.
